Open House
‘A series of surprises’ is how Sir John Betjeman once
described a Cathedral. The architecture of Harmony House, a community centre at
the heart of the Goresbrook ward in Dagenham, in many ways echoes Betjeman's
famous description.
In 1990 the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary commissioned the
Iranian architect, F. Alexander Sefre, to create a new centre for learning that
would encompass all beliefs.
Construction of the new purpose-built block was completed in 2000. Educational facilities
include large multi-use split-level classrooms, an art and craft room and a
large dining area extending to the courtyard.
The Sacred Space, the spiritual centre of the whole project, is open to all
faiths and beliefs and, together with the courtyard, seeks to provide
inspiration and peace.
The architectural style has successfully merged ancient Persian features,
contemporary building techniques, with classical features and modern design.
The courtyard with its fountain and surrounding columns is a typical piece of
classical architecture. The great stone bulls that sit atop the columns, are
similar to those found at the ancient
The circular form of the Sacred Space suggests a sense of openness and
community. Light falls through the blue glass bricks on the curved wall and
reflects from the mirrors in the roof scattering patterns across the floor.
A sense of calm, space and light pervades Harmony House. Many visitors have
commented how it feels 'like an oasis in the heart of Dagenham'.
